Solar Panels in Sunderland

Installation, servicing, repair and battery storage for solar PV systems.

Solar panels are no longer a novelty — they pay back in 6-9 years on most Sunderland roofs and dramatically cut electricity bills. We work with an MCS-registered installer to do the technical work and we handle the site coordination.

Solar Panel Installation

A typical residential solar PV system in Sunderland is around 3.5-5kW peak — 8 to 12 panels on a south, south-east or south-west facing roof. Even east-and-west-split roofs produce excellent output across the day. Installation takes one to two days depending on the system size, with scaffolding erected for the morning of day one and dismantled by the end of day two.

Our partnered installer is MCS-registered and RECC member, which means the work qualifies for the Smart Export Guarantee (the scheme that pays you for power you send back to the grid). Every job includes a full performance certificate and DNO notification.

Battery Storage

Battery storage — Tesla Powerwall, GivEnergy, Solax and other AC-coupled units — lets you store the solar power you generate during the day and use it in the evening. With current grid tariffs the payback on a battery is typically 7-10 years when paired with solar.

Batteries can also be retrofitted to existing solar installations, even from other suppliers. Modern batteries are AC-coupled, so they connect to your consumer unit rather than to the solar inverter, making retrofitting straightforward.

Maintenance & Servicing

Solar systems need very little maintenance — but they do benefit from a service every three to five years to check inverter performance, clean any panels that have accumulated moss or bird-mess, verify the rooftop connections are still tight, and update the inverter firmware. A typical service is around £150-£250 with a full report.

We also handle warranty claims with the original installer if your system is showing low output. Inverters fail more often than the panels themselves and a replacement is usually a half-day job covered under warranty for the first 5-10 years.

Repairs & Upgrades

Bird-nesting under panels is a common Sunderland problem — we fit mesh skirts to block access. Older inverters from companies that have gone out of business can be replaced with modern equivalents (SolarEdge, SMA, Solis, Growatt). EV-charger integration with solar diverters (so your car charges from spare solar power) is a popular upgrade.

Why Sunderland Customers Choose Us for Solar Panels

Sunderland is full of trades and not all of them turn up. We hear that from new customers almost every week — someone has waited two days for a callback, taken a morning off work for a quote that never arrived, or been chased for cash on a job that was never finished properly. We built our reputation by doing the simple things consistently: answering the phone, turning up when we say we will, giving fixed prices in writing, doing the job to a tidy standard, and leaving the house cleaner than we found it.

We are not the cheapest in Sunderland and we do not try to be — but we believe we offer the best value when you balance price, reliability and finish quality.

The Process — What to Expect When You Book

1. Enquiry. Fill in our contact form with a brief description of the work and a few photos if you can — the more we know upfront, the more accurate our quote will be. We respond within 24 hours on working days, often much sooner.

2. Site visit and quote. For most solar panels work we like to visit the property to give an accurate fixed price. The visit is free, takes 15-30 minutes and there is no obligation. For very small jobs we can quote from photographs alone.

3. Booking. Once you agree the quote we send a confirmation email and book a date. We do not take deposits for jobs under £500 — you pay on completion when you are happy with the work.

4. The work. We arrive on the agreed day in the agreed time slot. We dust-sheet floors, protect skirting and furniture, and work tidily. We keep you informed if anything changes.

5. Completion and payment. When the job is finished we walk you through it, hand over any guarantees or certificates and take payment. Card, bank transfer or cash all welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a typical solar system cost?
A 4kW domestic system with no battery is around £6,500-£8,500 installed. With a battery, around £10,500-£14,500. Prices are coming down year-on-year.
How long until it pays back?
With current electricity prices and the Smart Export Guarantee, a domestic system pays back in 6-9 years and then runs for another 20+ years generating effectively free power.
Will I get the same number of panels approved on a small roof?
For most roofs in Sunderland, yes. Older detached and bungalow roofs often have plenty of unshaded space. Terraces are more limited but still work.
Do I need planning permission?
Almost never — solar panels are permitted development for most homes. Listed buildings and conservation areas need planning permission.
