Privacy Notice

How we look after the information you share with us — short, plain English, no jargon.

This privacy notice explains how Handyman Sunderland ("we", "us") collects, uses and protects the personal information you share with us when you use this website or contact us for a quote.

Who We Are

Handyman Sunderland is a small handyman business based in Sunderland, United Kingdom. Our contact email for privacy queries is info@handymansunderland.co.uk.

What We Collect

When you submit our contact form, we collect: your name, your email address, your postcode, the service you are interested in, the message you write, and the consent confirmation. We may also collect, automatically, basic web-server log data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you viewed — this is standard web-server logging and is used only for security and aggregate-traffic purposes.

Why We Collect It

We collect this information for one purpose only: to reply to your enquiry and, if you go ahead, to manage the job. The legal basis is your consent (you tick the consent box when sending the form) and our legitimate interest in delivering the service you have asked us to provide.

How We Use It

We use your information to: reply to your enquiry by email; provide a written quote; agree a date for the work; carry out the work; and bill for the work. We do not share your information with any third party for marketing, profiling or any other purpose.

Who We Share It With

Your information is not shared with any third party for marketing purposes. The only third-parties who handle your data on our behalf are: our email service provider (which transports the form submission to our inbox), our website host (20i Ltd, who host this site), and HMRC where the law requires us to retain transaction records. None of these parties use your data for their own purposes.

How Long We Keep It

If you do not become a customer, we retain enquiry emails for up to 12 months and then delete them. If you do become a customer, we retain the job record (including your contact details) for six years after the end of the relationship, in line with HMRC record-keeping requirements.

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to: be informed about how we use your data (this notice), access the data we hold about you, have inaccurate data corrected, have your data erased (subject to our HMRC retention obligations), restrict or object to processing, and lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@handymansunderland.co.uk and we will respond within one month.

Cookies

This website does not set any tracking, analytics or advertising cookies. Your browser may store a small number of strictly necessary technical items (e.g. session tokens used by our hosting platform to protect against form spam), but nothing that identifies you personally is set, and nothing is shared with third-party advertisers or analytics providers.

Security

The contact form on this website is transmitted over HTTPS. Submissions are protected by a hidden honeypot field that catches the overwhelming majority of automated spam, and by basic rate-limiting at the server. Our email inbox is protected by a strong, unique password and two-factor authentication.

How Data Moves Through Our Process

When you submit the enquiry form on this site, the following happens. First, your browser sends the form data to our website host over HTTPS. The host's PHP environment runs a small script that validates the fields (checking the honeypot, checking the consent box, and so on), then composes an email and passes it to the mail-server queue. The email is delivered to our inbox, hosted by a UK-based provider. We read it, reply to it from a regular email account, and (if you become a customer) save a copy of the thread into a job folder. We do not run web analytics on enquiry data, we do not pass any of it to advertising networks, and we do not retain copies of the form payload anywhere outside the inbox and (if relevant) the job folder.

Children's Data

This website and service are aimed at adult homeowners, tenants, landlords and small-business customers. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If a parent or guardian becomes aware that a child has submitted data through our enquiry form, please contact us and we will delete it immediately.

Data Outside the UK

All the third-parties listed above store and process our data within the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area. We do not transfer any personal data outside these regions. If we ever needed to change our hosting or email provider to one based elsewhere, we would update this notice in advance.

Marketing

We do not send marketing emails. The only emails you will ever receive from us are the direct reply to your enquiry, follow-up emails about a specific job we are working on for you, and (very occasionally) a polite check-in if we have not heard back after sending a quote. We do not have a mailing list and we do not run promotional campaigns. If we ever change this in future, we will only contact existing customers and we will give them a clear, one-click way to opt out.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, please get in touch with us at info@handymansunderland.co.uk first — we will do our best to fix the issue quickly. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at any time. The ICO can be reached at ico.org.uk, by post at Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, or by phone on 0303 123 1113.

We may update this notice from time to time. The latest version will always be at /privacy.html with a "last updated" date.
